Not all prebuilt computers are poorly made. Some premium systems, including Dell Alienware desktops, can be well built. The drawback is that many use proprietary motherboards, power supplies and other components. Replacement parts and upgrades often must be purchased directly from the manufacturer, making them considerably more expensive and slower to obtain.

Quality can vary even more with prebuilt gaming computers sold through online marketplaces. I have opened systems and found missing motherboard screws, inexpensive no-name power supplies, low-quality memory and storage drives, and components that were installed without being properly secured.

In one system with a serious overheating problem, the builder had failed to remove the protective plastic film from the liquid cooler’s contact plate. The film had melted against the processor assembly, creating a mess that should never have left the builder’s shop.

Cheap parts and rushed assembly may lower the initial price, but they frequently cost more in repairs, lost data and replacement parts later.
