Signs Your SSD Is Failing and What to Do About It
SSDs are faster and generally more reliable than traditional mechanical hard drives, but they can still fail. Some drives deteriorate gradually and produce warning signs. Others stop working with little or no warning. Recognizing the symptoms early may be the difference between a straightforward data transfer and an extremely expensive professional data-recovery service.
Common Signs of SSD Failure
- Slow Startup and Application Loading
If Windows suddenly takes much longer to start or applications are loading unusually slowly, the drive may be having difficulty reading data. Slow performance alone does not prove the SSD is failing, but it should be investigated, especially when accompanied by other symptoms.
- Boot Device Errors
A “Boot Device Not Found,” “No Bootable Device,” or similar startup error is one of the most common symptoms I see. It can mean the computer is no longer detecting the SSD, the Windows boot partition is damaged, or the drive itself is failing.
- Windows Recovery or Reset Will Not Work
Windows includes built-in recovery and reset tools, but these features may repeatedly fail when the drive contains unreadable blocks, damaged sectors, or partition corruption. Before assuming Windows simply needs to be reinstalled, the physical condition of the drive should be tested.
- Files Will Not Save Correctly
Files that will not save, open, or copy properly may indicate that sections of the drive are no longer storing data reliably. Missing or corrupted files are an urgent reason to stop using the computer and protect the remaining data.
- SMART Warnings During Startup
Most modern drives include SMART monitoring that tracks indicators related to drive health. If the computer displays a SMART error during startup, it should not be ignored. Back up the data and have the drive tested as soon as possible.
- Excessive Heat or Visible Damage
A failing SSD may become unusually hot. In severe cases, I have seen visible heat damage or melting around the drive or its connections. If there is excessive heat, a burning smell, or visible damage, shut the computer down immediately.
Traditional mechanical hard drives may also produce clicking or grinding sounds when failing. SSDs have no moving parts, so they will not click, but they can still fail gradually or instantly.
How I Diagnose a Suspected Failing Drive
- I remove the drive from the customer’s computer and connect it to a dedicated diagnostic system. Before running extensive tests, I first attempt to recover and copy the customer’s important data.
- This order matters. Testing places additional demand on a damaged drive and can make an existing failure worse. If the data is important and the drive is already severely damaged, unnecessary testing may reduce the chances of recovery. If I cannot safely recover the files, the drive may need to be sent to a specialized data-recovery laboratory. That type of recovery can be extremely expensive.
- After protecting the data, I use professional drive-diagnostic software to examine the physical condition of the drive and identify block or sector errors that may confirm deterioration.
- My standard is simple: if the diagnostic software reports any block or sector errors, regardless of how few, I recommend replacing the drive. A small error today can become a complete failure tomorrow, and the customer’s data is not worth that risk.
Why I Do Not Clone a Failing Drive
I do not clone damaged drives or damaged Windows partitions. Cloning can reproduce corrupted files, partition damage, and other problems on the replacement drive. It also forces the failing drive to read every accessible area, placing additional stress on hardware that may already be close to complete failure.
When possible, I recover the customer’s files separately, replace the damaged drive, install a clean copy of Windows, and restore the recovered data afterward. This provides a stable operating system without carrying the damaged partition onto the new drive.
What to Do If You Suspect Drive Failure
Stop using the computer for anything that writes additional data to the drive. Do not repeatedly restart it, run repair utilities, reset Windows, or attempt to clone the drive before protecting the files you cannot replace.
