How to Factory Reset Your Computer Without Losing Everything

When you select the "Keep my files" option during a reset, here is what happens behind the scenes: 

• What stays safe: Your personal user folders: including Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, and Videos: remain untouched. Your core user profile and custom account settings are preserved.

• What gets cleared: Installed desktop applications, non-built-in software (like Microsoft Office, Adobe suites, and games), and customized system configurations are wiped clean.

2. Export app-specific data: Remember that browser bookmarks, email archives, and offline game saves often live inside specific application folders. Export your browser bookmarks and verify your game saves are synced to the cloud.

3. Inventory your software: Make a quick list of the software licenses and applications you currently use so you can easily reinstall them afterward.

If your keyboard commands are unresponsive and your computer remains entirely locked up, it is time for a controlled hard shutdown. While turning off your computer by holding the power button should never be your first resort, doing it correctly prevents data corruption and hardware stress. 

1. Press and Hold: Press the physical power button on your desktop or laptop for 5 to 10 seconds until the power light cuts off completely.

6. Review and Confirm: Windows will present a clear summary of what will happen. Click Reset and let your computer do the heavy lifting. Ensure your laptop or desktop is plugged into a stable power source throughout the process!

What happens if your computer is stuck in a boot loop or refuses to reach the desktop entirely? Don't panic. You can still access the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to save your system. 

• Trigger Recovery: If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold down the Shift key while clicking Restart in the power menu. If the computer won't boot at all, interrupting the startup sequence three times (by powering down during the boot logo) will automatically trigger the automatic repair environment.

• Navigate to Reset: Once inside WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

Select Keep My Files: Choose the file-preservation option, pick your reinstallation method, and follow the on-screen prompts to bring your machine back to life.
